? ? ?? ( ? ? ? Meeting of the College Democrats Minutes 2/13/07
In Attendance: Kacy Wothe, Peter G., Liam Glover, Justin Martin, Jacob SEamans, Lisa Hughes, Matt Pollari, Galen Mitchell, Eric Nelson, Laura Groenjes, Jon Carlson, Allan Johnson, Brian Curran, Danielle Harms, Niko, and 3 College Republicans
The College Republicans Document
-As some of you know, the proposed list of policies set forth by the College Republicans has sparked much confusion, controversy, and debate on campus. This document was not prepared to be leaked to the public, and being partially the Democrat?s fault for allowing it to do so, we felt the need to clarify some issues we had pertaining to the document. What follows is a (shortened?.sorry, I couldn?t write that fast) transcription of what was discussed. The ?Q? represents the questions posed by the Dems (hopefully with a name following) and the ?A? is the answer posed by one of the three Republicans that attended our meeting.
Q (Eric): What was the Genesis of this document?
A: From past acts of injustice based on personal experiences (these were isolated instances). The document was not intended to go public as this time as the wording was not quite how the Republicans wanted it.
Q (Galen): Did this document spawn from the ?Grow toward tolerance signs? (meanwhile in the corner, Peter was having chair troubles. We made a unanimous decision to ignore him)?
A: The Republicans did not agree with the meaning of tolerance set forth in these signs. They believed it to be loaded. They, instead, used a definition of tolerance from Webster?s Dictionary, which they thought would promote their goal of moving toward respect. It was mentioned that these signs were not approved.
Q (Eric): Do you (the Republicans) know the origin of the signs?
A: Speculated that they originated from the swastika in the snow last winter.
A (from Eric): They came from the CII senior seminar of last year. They were meant to be a symbol of acceptance and only be hung on dorm room doors (it was agreed by all that it was acceptable to hang these on dorm room doors).
Q (Eric): Is there a difference between hanging on a dorm room door and hanging in an office or a campus building window?
A: Charlie Strey and Hank Toutain agreed this was a violation, as the signs were never approved.
Q (Eric): Is a person allowed to put anything on a desk?
A: Yes
Q: What?s the difference with windows?
A: Since it is in a public window, it means the entire office is condoning the poster without providing an authorship. The Republicans are not opposed to different viewpoints.
Q (Justin): Valid points were definitely made in the document, but it seemed the language was severe and inflammatory.
A: Soft language falls on dead fingers. Can we get a specific example?
Q: Extortion passage: doesn?t push change in a positive way.
A: Strong language is needed to inflict change.
Q(Galen): I think the Dems can all agree on our distaste for the language, but the real question is where do we go from here?
Justin inputted that milder language may increase compromise and more acceptance.
A: We would have gone public with softer language had we the opportunity to revise before the document went public.
Q (Eric): We recognize that you had not intended for it to go public yet, but will you continue your course with the administration and perhaps work with us and other campus organizations on revising it?
Q(Galen): What are you doing to move on?
A: Right now we are focusing on damage control but we plan on reforming it and working with other groups in the process.
Q (Jake): When will you bring it to other groups?
A: End of spring.
Q (Eric): Who else do you plan to involve?
A: Senate for sure and as many organizations as possible.
Q (Galen): We know you are interested in writing an Academic Bill of Rights. Do you propose the Republicans and the Dems write independent constitutions and then combine them for a final presentation?
A: It would be nice if we could write it together to present in as one combined document.
Q (Peter): What do you want from the Dems?
A: Support for the Bill of Rights.
Q (Liam): Problem with Republican?s statement about Raj leading a protest in the campus center.
A: We recognize now that he did not organize it but we did see him as leading it. ?Active participation? would have been better.
Eric: Raj was only observing to watch for disagreements among students. He was not supporting or taking part.
A: He was seen with a sign chanting.
Lisa: Raj and Cheryl Hastingings were both involved.
Galen: We?ve reached an understanding.
Eric: Thank you for real communication.
Lisa: Thanks for coming. Your document did have many valid points.
A: You can email HYPERLINK "mailto:grorem at gac.edu" grorem at gac.edu if you have any questions.
Eric: I want to encourage all dems to help the Republicans with the damage control. Don?t make the situation worse for the Republicans.
Peter: Sorry it got out.
Moving on to the Dems agenda?.
Meeting Times
-We need a room because Tuesdays are booked.
-PASO has the board room from 6-8 but they may finish early.
-Eric will find a room?..somewhere.
-Lisa had a brainstorm?.staff and faculty lounge (too bad it was mentioned a second ago?.and shot down).
III. Executive Board Positions
-Parliamentarian
-Nominees were Allan, Danielle, and Liam (although there is a tabled motion that names Allan parliamentarian for life, it will remain tabled).
-Speeches:
-Liam-enjoys reading, would read constitution, wants to know the procedures, has senate experience as parliamentarian.
-Questions: Fave color? Red. Fave pie: Indifferent.
-Much harassment followed.
-Danielle-Has read constitution, wants to use it more, favorite color is green, and doesn?t like pie.
-Allan (spoken through Jake who jumped over the tables to the center with a clap in true Allan style)-Allan helped write the constitution, 1 and ? years experience, ex-pres, has a key, color is red, loves the dems, has a gf now (so electing him may cause an increase in power which would force him to end his relationship) However, Allan will assert more power than he is allotted, and if progress on top of his head continues in such a fashion, he will resort to a beret (not a toupee, since he already has a comb-over.
-Danielle won!!!
-Liason to the Republicans
-Justin won by unanimous consent.
-The Republicans meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:00.
IV. Peter wants to make an Outreach Coordinator position for the Dems
-this person will meet with the diversity leadership council
-this is important because the Dems are not a very diverse group.
-it will be an unofficial position filled by Peter.
V. Pizza and Politics with the Greens
-Tuesday, February 20th
-The initial topic (?Is God Green?) is not supported by the Dems
-We will focus on energy/environmental issues
-In the future we want to co-sponsor a P&P with the Republicans (perhaps during diversity week)
Meanwhile, Allan showed up and assured us he will still try to assert power that he really doesn?t have. So, rest assured.
Demfest
-Peter will contact Judy Gau about what politicians have responded to the Burton Dinner so we know who to invite.
VII. T-shirt
-We picked a donkey
-Galen and Eric will figure financing
VIII. Jake-we need to raise money.
Random acts of kindness week put on by APO.
-They want all campus organizations involved, so start thinking of ideas the Dems can do at a table in the campus center at the end of March.
