For those of you not familiar with being on this list, ever week the
Dems secretary will send out a brief summary of important things that
went down at the latest Dems meeting. I have attached this weeks
minutes in a Word file for you all to read. I reccomend you read them
whether or not you were at the meeting because there is alot of
important information that you either didn't hear because you weren't
there or you might have missed or forgotten already. Plus, there's
jokes usually, and missing jokes is a cardinal sin or something like
that....yeah.

?GAC Dems Kickoff!?

Pre-Meeting
-Everyone slowly files in, most having to step over people waiting in line for a shirt at the ?Can I Kiss You? event. I?d like to point out that it wasn?t even 7 yet and the show didn?t start until 8. Not to mention that, but the shirt doesn?t even look that good, it?s gray and says a phrase that if you truly cared about, you?d say it to me on a far more regular basis.
Marcus Schmit
-Because he didn?t know how long he?d be staying, Marcus Schmit got his chance to speak before the meeting officially started (the official start of course being when ?The Rockstar? Allan Johnson started talking).
-He went on at length about something which for the life of me I can?t remember, and I had grabbed a copy of the little flyer he gave out, but Eric Nelson stole it. That?s right, Eric, I know it was you.

Meeting Officially Starts
-The illustrious President Allan Johnson announces that he would like to make a speech.
-Before it even starts Bob hides his face and Eric turns beet red. Way to support your president, douchebags.
-The speech was apparently around 5 minutes long and was too pages. The president touched on several subjects while pacing too much and not looking up at his audience very well.
-The purpose of the speech was to:
-Reach out to the increasingly apathetic college student
-Vent as to the current state of our government/country
-Explain what we, as a campus organization can do to forward change
-What can we do to forward change?
-Phone Bank
-Door Knock
-Lit Drop
-Hold Events
-And in general reach out to the generally uninformed community
-Great speech poorly executed
-There is a copy of the speech in the Dems office for those who are interested in reading it, because President Allan can?t bring himself to throw it away
Introductions
-Christian Sande walks in late
-As does Dan Johnson
-Bob seems to think intros are a little stupid
-Allan seems to think Bob is a little stupid
-This writer agrees with Allan
Kathy Sheran and Terry Morrow
-The representatives for Sheran talk for both candidates
-They would like involvement
-Matt Polari shows up almost half an hour late
-The Sheran campaign forgot the volunteer sheet
-Email acarlile at gac.edu if you?re interested in volunteering for the Kathy Sheran campaign
-Matt Polari leaves the meeting with an oddly large smile on his face
-The Morrow campaign feels we need to out-organize and mobilize the money powerhouse that is the Davis campaign if we expect to win
-What that means to you is that you should help volunteer for the campaign if you have the time
DFL Youth?something?something
-Matt Polari returns with a pop for Christian Sande
-I think it was Coke
-The DFL Youth people are hell bent on registering people to vote and actually get them out to vote.
-It?s good to see them hard at it, because when college students vote, Democrats win
-The group is dorm-storming this Sunday
-Anyone is welcome to come
-Meet at 2pm by Three Flags
VII. Christian Sande Speaks
-He?s curious as to why we?re here
-As in, what motivates us as democrats
-In speaking for Mike Hatch, Sande talks about education costs and healthcare, which are Hatch?s two main platforms
-Sande really hates high medical costs
-We broach gay marriage and how the republicans turn it into a far bigger deal that it should be taken as
-Jobs, education, and healthcare are what MN should be/is more worried about
-Sande talks about the importance of k-12 education
-Sande wants eyes and ears for the Hatch campaign
-No, Hatch is not a witch who will be using human body parts for a stew, but instead he wants to hear what we have to say about stuff
VIII. Tabling
-I kid you not, this was the heading for this exact spot last time I did the minutes, and here we are again discussing it at this point in the meeting
-Creepy
-?Nobody should ever be forced to see a republican? ?Eric Nelson on the GAC Republicans tabling.
-We?re tabling on Wednesday the 20th (that?s this week)
-Anyone is welcome to come help out, I know I?ll be stopping by when ever I get the chance to
-The current schedule is as follows:
-10-10:30: Eric Nelson, Andy Winn, Peter G
-10:30-11:30: Steven Palmer, Peter G.
-11:30-12:30: Drew Strandness, Matt Pollari, Peter G
-12:30-1:30: Eric Nelson, Peter G
-Tabling is tons-o-fun, and I recommend anyone who?s just getting into the Dems to give tabling a go, as its one of the most enjoyable ways to help the group out.
IX. Meeting Times
-The question is brought up as to if we should move our meetings to Wednesdays instead.
-Nobody has any problem with that
-We?ll move to Wednesdays, but the people who requested the move better damn well show up
GAC Dems Elections
-After last year, most of our group?s officers graduated, leaving our current officers as Allan Johnson and Eric Nelson. To rectify this, most of the officer positions will be up for election at the next meeting. We?re looking a lot for younger people, freshmen and sophmores, folks who?ll be carrying the group on in years to come. So come and run for a position!
-The positions that will be up for election are:
-GAC Dems Co-President: As much as President Allan loves being the sole head of the group, it?s a rough job and our constitution allocates us multiple presidents. Therefore, the second President position will be up for grabs
-GAC Dems Secretary/First Mate: This is the person who writes the minutes for the meetings, it is a coveted position with a lot of notoriety for a surprisingly small amount of work and almost zero stress. However, the secretary is fairly obligated to come to every meeting.
-GAC Dems Treasurer: This is the group?s head of finances. Eric Nelson has stated that he will be stepping down from this position and therefore it will be up for grabs. For any questions on what the position does, contact Eric Nelson
-GAC Dems Technical Director: This person updates and maintains the email list and website. Currently the website is floating around waiting for a new technical director who?s willing to go to IT and learn how to run it.
-GAC Dems Liaison to the GAC Republicans: This is our contact to the College Republicans, he/she is expected to go to meetings and report back and help coordinate events co-sponsored by both groups
-The GAC Dems President, Allan Johnson, would also like to have some volunteers for people who would be liaisons to the Hatch, Walz, Sheran, Morrow, Richie, Otto, and Klobuchar campaigns. If you?re interested, come to the next meeting and volunteer.
XI. Election Day
-Volunteers are needed for various jobs, contact aknewtson at gac.edu or lhughes at gac.edu for more information
-The volunteers need a large room on campus in which to run out of on election day
-I think one of the co-presidents is supposed to take care of that
-Er?.the president

XII. Debate on Campus!
-GAC?s own Terry Morrow will be debating Andy Davis on October 5th!

Ladies and Gentlemen, here we are at another year of Gustavus. Welcome back to those who?ve been here before and welcome in general to those of you who haven?t. I would like to extend a special greeting to those of you who are joining the GAC Dems. I hope you come to the meetings and voice your concerns and ideas at how we as a group can further make an impact. Our meetings are fun too, so it?s not like a total bring down for forty-five minutes every Wednesday, otherwise I wouldn?t have kept coming back.
As a note, I?d like to point out that I (now speaking as the president), am trying to make myself as available as possible. I can usually be found in the Dems office every week day from 3:30-4:30 if not 2:30-4:30+, and am more than welcome to jaw it up with someone passing by. Very often I am available on Saturdays in the office as well, and sometimes Sundays. The Dems Office is located in the Gustie Den, which is downstairs across from Res Life/PA Office/Diversity Center area. If you are unsure as to if I?m there or not, feel free to call the office at 7143, if I?m there I?ll pick up. If I?m not there and some voice mail comes on, don?t leave a message, as I?m not sure if there is voice mail on this phone and if there is, I have no idea how to set it up. I am also available by appointment, just email me at ajohnson at gac.edu. I don?t need to talk business either; I welcome anybody on the list that hasn?t met me to stop by some time. I?m up for any bit of jaw-jacking, breeze-shooting, drink-drinking, scandal-causing, chit-chatting, or even Bush-bashing that you?re interested in. SO STOP BY!
